Wedding in a Riad: What You Need to Know
Riads — traditional Moroccan houses built around a central courtyard — are among the most romantic and intimate wedding venues in Marrakech. Here's everything you need to know about hosting your celebration in one.
Capacity & Layout
Most riads can accommodate 30-80 guests comfortably. The typical layout includes a ground-floor courtyard for the ceremony, a rooftop terrace for the cocktail hour, and interior salons for dining. Larger riads or riad-hotels can handle up to 120 guests.
Theming & Décor
Riads are inherently beautiful with their zellige tilework, carved plaster, and planted courtyards. This means you need less décor to create a stunning atmosphere. Focus on enhancing what's already there — candles, rose petals, lanterns, and simple floral arrangements work beautifully.
Catering Considerations
Riad kitchens are often compact, so your caterer needs experience working in these spaces. Many riads have their own in-house chef who can prepare a traditional Moroccan feast. External caterers can also work, but coordinate logistics in advance.
Photography Tips
Riads offer incredible natural light and textures for photography. The courtyard fountain, carved doorways, and rooftop views of the Atlas Mountains are all perfect backdrops. Schedule your couple portraits during golden hour on the rooftop for magical results.
Choosing the Right Riad
Consider location (medina vs. outskirts), accessibility for elderly guests, noise levels (medina riads can be noisy), kitchen facilities, and whether the riad offers exclusive use. I always recommend visiting in person before booking.
