Claire & Youssef: A Grand Celebration at Selman Marrakech

Claire grew up in Lyon. Youssef grew up in Casablanca. They met in Paris, fell in love over couscous and Cotes du Rhone, and dreamed of a wedding that would honor both cultures equally. Marrakech — where France and Morocco have intertwined for over a century — was the natural choice.

The Vision

This was never going to be a small affair. With Claire's large French family and Youssef's equally expansive Moroccan one, the guest list quickly reached 180. The couple wanted a celebration that felt both grand and warm — a place where Youssef's grandmother would feel as comfortable as Claire's university friends. The design language was 'French chateau meets Moroccan palace': crystal chandeliers above hand-woven Berber rugs, French champagne alongside Moroccan mint tea, classical strings during the ceremony and a Gnawa band to close the night.

The Venue: Selman Marrakech

Selman Marrakech was the obvious choice. Its neoclassical architecture, manicured gardens, and legendary Arabian horses create a setting that bridges both cultures effortlessly. The hotel's infinity pool, framed by the Atlas Mountains, served as the backdrop for the ceremony. Dinner was held in the grand garden under a canopy of thousands of fairy lights. The Selman team's experience with large-scale celebrations meant the logistics were handled with military precision.

Day 1: The Henna Night

The celebration began with a traditional Moroccan henna evening. Youssef's family hosted 80 guests at a private villa with live Andalusian music, a neggafa (traditional Moroccan bridal dresser) who adorned Claire in four different caftans throughout the night, and elaborate henna designs applied by two master artists. Platters of Moroccan pastries, dried fruits, and mint tea were passed continuously. For Claire's French guests, it was a mesmerizing introduction to Moroccan wedding traditions.

Day 2: The Wedding

The ceremony began at 5 PM. Guests were seated on both sides of the infinity pool, with the Atlas Mountains glowing amber behind. A French officiant and a Moroccan imam co-led the ceremony — readings alternated between French and Arabic, and the vows were exchanged bilingually. Claire wore a Pronovias gown with a cathedral-length veil, and Youssef wore a midnight blue Tom Ford suit. As they were pronounced married, Selman's signature Arabian horses paraded along the pool — an unscripted moment of pure magic.

The Reception

Cocktail hour featured a raw bar, sushi station, and Moroccan mezze alongside Veuve Clicquot. Dinner was a five-course seated affair by the Selman culinary team: amuse-bouche of beetroot and goat cheese, lobster bisque, rack of lamb with chermoula, and a choice of tarte tatin or traditional Moroccan pastilla au lait for dessert. The wedding cake — a six-tier masterpiece decorated with sugar roses and gold leaf — was a joint creation by a French patissier and a Moroccan pastry chef.

The Party

After dinner, the garden transformed into a nightclub. A 10-piece band played the first set, seamlessly weaving between French chanson, Moroccan chaabi, and international pop. At midnight, a surprise Gnawa troupe performed a 30-minute set that had every guest — from 8-year-old flower girls to 85-year-old grandmothers — dancing barefoot on the grass. The night ended at 3 AM with a food truck serving merguez sandwiches and French fries.

The Numbers

Guests: 180. Total budget: 52,000 euros. Venue & accommodation package: 18,000 euros. Catering & beverages: 14,000 euros. Flowers & decor (including henna night): 6,500 euros. Photography & videography: 5,000 euros. Music & entertainment: 4,500 euros. Wedding planner: 6,000 euros. Stationery, favors & welcome bags: 2,000 euros. Bride & groom outfits: 4,500 euros. Claire and Youssef's wedding was proof that two cultures, two languages, and two families can come together in perfect harmony. Every detail honored both traditions, and the result was a celebration that felt both epic and deeply personal.
