Sarah & James: An Intimate Riad Wedding in the Medina
When Sarah and James first called me from London, they knew two things: they wanted their wedding to feel like a dinner party with their closest friends, and they wanted it somewhere that would take everyone's breath away. Marrakech was already on their shortlist — one visit to a candlelit riad sealed the decision.
The Vision
Sarah is an interior designer with an eye for texture and warmth. She didn't want a traditional wedding — she wanted an evening that felt collected, layered, and personal. Think mismatched vintage candlesticks, hand-written place cards on handmade paper, potted herbs instead of formal centerpieces, and a color palette of terracotta, sage, and cream. James, a music producer, curated every song personally — from the ceremony processional to the last dance.
The Venue: Riad BE
We chose Riad BE, a beautifully restored riad in the heart of the medina with a lush courtyard centered around a plunge pool and fountain. The ground floor accommodated a seated dinner for 45 guests around three long communal tables, while the rooftop terrace served as the ceremony space with panoramic views of the Atlas Mountains and the Koutoubia Mosque. The riad's existing decor — zellige tiles in deep green, hand-carved cedar doors, and whitewashed walls — provided the perfect canvas.
The Ceremony
At 5:30 PM, with the call to prayer echoing across the medina, Sarah walked up the narrow riad staircase to the rooftop where James was waiting. A close friend officiated, reading from Rumi and Mary Oliver. Sarah wore a silk slip dress by Reformation, paired with vintage gold earrings from her grandmother. James wore a cream linen suit with no tie. The ceremony lasted twenty minutes and not a single eye was dry.
Dinner & Dancing
Guests descended to the candlelit courtyard for a four-course Moroccan-French fusion dinner by Nomadeats. The menu: rose petal and goat cheese pastilla to start, lamb tagine with preserved lemon and olives, a trio of Moroccan salads, and a tower of profiteroles filled with orange blossom cream. The cake was a simple two-tier affair covered in edible flowers from the local souk. After dinner, the tables were cleared and the courtyard became a dance floor — James's curated playlist carried them until 2 AM.
Details That Made It Special
Sarah sourced Moroccan tea glasses from the souk as guest favors, filling each with local wildflower honey. The welcome bags included a hand-illustrated map of the medina with their favorite restaurants and shops marked. Instead of a guest book, they set up a Polaroid station with a vintage camera — guests snapped photos and pinned them to a clothesline strung across the courtyard with handwritten notes.
The Numbers
Guests: 45. Total budget: 28,000 euros. Venue: 4,500 euros (3-night exclusive rental). Catering: 5,200 euros. Flowers & decor: 3,800 euros. Photography: 2,800 euros. Music (DJ + sound system): 1,200 euros. Stationery & paper goods: 900 euros. Bride's outfit: 1,800 euros. Wedding planner: 4,500 euros. Miscellaneous: 3,300 euros.
Sarah and James proved that an intimate wedding doesn't mean a lesser one. By focusing on quality over quantity — extraordinary food, personal details, and a venue with soul — they created an evening their guests still talk about years later.
